2018 Alaska Day Facebook Posts

I made several Facebook Posts on and around Alaska Day.  I am collecting them on this blog page, with a few extra pics added.

On the Sunday before Alaska Day I posted this:  “Alaska day is well and truly launched. The Historical Society Brew Cruise launched with the Seattle Pipes and Drums playing “Gary Owen.” An Irish band played near the bow and up on deck the New Archangel Russian Dancers were doing Russian Dances to Scottish bagpipe music while the Keystone Kops looked on.

The Historical society Brew Cruise had me shooting through the mist deep into Silver Bay.”

The Pipers came into KIFW where I do a midday program each weekday.  I set up the visit on the Sunday Cruise and they showed up Monday.  They couldn’t fit into the studio so I had them in the lobby.  My mic cable could not reach them so I just opened the studio door.  It worked just fine.

Alaska Day is supposed to be rainy.   A storm is scheduled to come in tonight but on Alaska Day morning we had sun and the rain and wind held off for the parade.

On Alaska Day  “Suzi and I attended the Mourning Ceremony on the base of Noow Tlein (Castle Hill.) I love to celebrate Alaska Day, the Parade, the bagpipes, the historical society events, but I also want to honor my Tlingit friends and their historical pain at being excluded from decisions of what happened to their land and their culture. After generations of forced assimilation the Tlingit culture is reasserting itself.”  (To read more about this click here.)

A highlight of any Alaska Day is the Coast Guard Air Station Sitka rescue swimmer demonstration. I don’t suppose that the Coasties could hear the applause over the roar of the rotor blades from those of us watching but be assured it was hearty and heartfelt. Thank You USCG.”
